A Slow Procession of Heart Aches…

…a slow procession of heart aches follows each casket to its resting place amid appropriate darkness…today promises to be a sunny day and that will change the tenor of the ceremonies…into each of us will creep the thought of why each of them is no longer here to share in its warmth…into our eyes and ears the steady flow of fact, fiction, homilies and curses continually churns our hearts…the catch phrases on the web and the anchor peoples’ various observations keep the tragedy fresh with breaking revelations and ceaseless demands…apparently WalMart sells assault rifles.

I never would have known nor even guessed this but knowing it doesn’t surprise me all that much…guns are commodities bought and sold in our country pretty much like eggs and milk…many varieties, many different packages holding essentially the same contents…only guns don’t get served at breakfast…they get to deliver their contents at any time striking deep and suddenly…at some small percentage they take lives for cheap, destroy families and leave rubble in their wake…a small percentage but a huge cost…how to weigh rights against a common good…how to separate the wheat from the shaft…this is our dilemma and it is best illustrated by WalMart’s suggestion that an assault rifle would make a fine Christmas gift to those we love and want to express that love with a very special gift to place beneath the tree.

How did we get from the right to bear arms against tyranny to the right to bear arms against our neighbors…from the noble wording of the constitution to Charlton Heston’s rhetoric about tearing his rifle from his dead fingers…how do we protect the sport from turning on us and creating the havoc that blankets our society and has come to define, in part, our national character…our president has termed these occurrences “routine”…that was a sad commentary on us…true…now where do we start to change that…
