A Tragedy Like No Other…

…a tragedy like no other in my memory…it follows me around as an unwanted companion, like a shadow, like a darkness without hope of light…the sight of a child, no matter the age, just any kid, kicks my emotions around, waters my eyes and sets my face into a vacant stare, my mind into neutral. December 14 was unimaginable and the reality brought up on every screen and echoed by every voice does not dispel the fog shrouding me. I have been with loved ones as they passed on, I have seen dead people who were strangers to me, but I have never witnessed the result of the kind of violence that shook that school room in Newtown…yet my mind keeps churning out suggestive images, keeps repeating saddened facts, keeps the shadow connected, keeps the confusion alive. I don’t have a connection with even one of those affected so I keep my distance and spin my ideas of how I might help…

…it seems that we should be more aware of these potentially lethal situations, should be more intelligent in resolving these threats to our common good…that we should have understood after nearly 250 years of us that we no longer need to kill to survive, that we no longer need to destroy to control our inner demons, that humanism is far more powerful, far more creative, and far more right than wrong.

…where can we go together? what can we accomplish if we demand an approach to our problems that is rational, focused, & considerate of all our peoples’ dignities?
