I Am Still Attempting To Make Sense…

I am still attempting to make sense of last Friday’s events with moments of failure mixed in with moments of success…this morning was a small success that could lead to a larger understanding.

On the drive to work, I listened to the Staples High School radio station broadcast of a school production of “It’s a Wonderful Life”…that experience was more meaningful somehow than watching the Capra movie…the words were pretty much the same but the meaning that came thru the radio was heightened by the recitations rather than diluted by the screen visuals…the realization was more intense than the movie eventually presented…what if one of us had never been here…what if, indeed.

Everyone has contributed to the lives of many others even if the realization of our influences escapes us…those children contributed and will continue to contribute even past that deadly day…the loss is evident in the words spoken on their behalf by tearful family and friends…their influence and their stories do make a difference…they do influence us…their momentary presence shaped their world as surly as it shaped ours…their images can help us to truly become a family of man as we grapple with the complex problems so illuminated by our divergent opinions on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The simple truth of our life’s influence on the world can become more clear and more focused if we remember their brief influential lives.

We can use our confusion to creatively develop effective and lasting solutions to our problems…we can use our dismay to allow us opportunities to communicate and celebrate ourselves, our families, our friends…we can use our anger to force a voice of reason into our laws and our rules…we can use our sorrow to better understand the thoughts and reasons of others…

…a more fitting tribute I cannot imagine…
