Noëlle Powers Earth Day with Technology

Noëlle Powers Earth Day with Technology

Hair color has long been an exclusive and closely guarded skill that has historically defied attempts to codify its secrets. Into this world stepped a technology-based company, SureTint, claiming not only an ability to codify but also to substantially reduce the amounts of color used in the pursuit of a guest’s desired look. When presented with these claims, Noëlle was skeptical at best…in truth, some downright derision was heard. However, the concept was beguiling. Could it be possible to reduce waste and guarantee repeatability? Could Pandora’s Box be opened with a touch screen? The company became interested. The question became, would our colorists, the absolute best team in the area, would they support a move into such uncharted waters? They had their reputations and their guests to consider. To their ever-lasting credit, they voted “…yes…let’s try it…” A trial run was approved by every one of the Noëlle Color Team and SureTint made its debut here on Earth Day 2014, an auspicious date and everyone knows how Noëlle loves auspiciousness. I Am Still Attempting To Make Sense…

I am still attempting to make sense of last Friday’s events with moments of failure mixed in with moments of success…this morning was a small success that could lead to a larger understanding. (more…)

A Slow Procession of Heart Aches…

A Slow Procession of Heart Aches…

…a slow procession of heart aches follows each casket to its resting place amid appropriate darkness…today promises to be a sunny day and that will change the tenor of the ceremonies…into each of us will creep the thought of why each of them is no longer here to share in its warmth…into our eyes and ears the steady flow of fact, fiction, homilies and curses continually churns our hearts…the catch phrases on the web and the anchor peoples’ various observations keep the tragedy fresh with breaking revelations and ceaseless demands…apparently WalMart sells assault rifles. A Tragedy Like No Other…

A Tragedy Like No Other…

…a tragedy like no other in my memory…it follows me around as an unwanted companion, like a shadow, like a darkness without hope of light…the sight of a child, no matter the age, just any kid, kicks my emotions around, waters my eyes and sets my face into a vacant stare, my mind into neutral. December 14 was unimaginable and the reality brought up on every screen and echoed by every voice does not dispel the fog shrouding me. I have been with loved ones as they passed on, I have seen dead people who were strangers to me, but I have never witnessed the result of the kind of violence that shook that school room in Newtown…yet my mind keeps churning out suggestive images, keeps repeating saddened facts, keeps the shadow connected, keeps the confusion alive. I don’t have a connection with even one of those affected so I keep my distance and spin my ideas of how I might help… (more…)

Fire, what fire?

Fire, what fire?

…so a phone conversation between myself and Gloria Gacher, Human Resources Director at Noëlle, was left hanging when she, without missing a beat, told me she would have to call me back as there was a fire in one of our wax rooms…what? what? what? I was forty miles away doing personal errand-catch-up after a month loaded with storm control, turkey control, construction control, and other various craziness that seems to rear up around our end of year holidays…then the wait…and the thoughts…and the wait…and the sweat beads began their race down my back…what? what? what?…then the update. Spring Education Day

Spring Education Day

Noëlle Spa hosted its Spring Education Day this past Monday and it was day like no other. We gathered to hear how our company will go forward into the second 50 years of its amazing life. Our history is a great part of us and the connection of that past with our present contains the seeds of where we will go in the future.

Our keynote speaker, Brad Stackhouse, showed how we could increase our personal fulfillment even as we become more focused on our personal success. He demonstrated how those two goals relate to one another and how that relationship actually holds the key to how we relate to one another and our guests.
His definition of a business’ purpose…to develop and maintain clients…stated a simple fact that often gets lost in the shuffle of everyday occurrences. (more…)

“…maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store…”

“…maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store…”

“…maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store…maybe Christmas means a great deal more…” — the Grinch

Whenever we are struck with a sentiment, we are fond of saying in jest, “…it’s a good thing that we are not emotional…” The truth is that the slightest nod sets us off and indeed our emotions are on high alert at this time of the year.

A dear friend of mine goes to stores that have Lay-A-Way programs and offers to pay the balances on gifts for people she will never know. She does it un-announced and un-heralded. She does it for the sheer joy of doing something that grows her heart. She stirs my emotions and inspires my thoughts.

For Cold Winter Nights & Family Gatherings of All Kinds

For Cold Winter Nights & Family Gatherings of All Kinds

I like to think of food as a unifying element in life. The act of preparing, serving, and savoring a meal with others is a source of great joy to me and a large part of my life. The Italian in me revels in food…its smell, its visual presentation, its taste, and its ability to unite disparate spirits.

As such, every season has its centerpiece dishes. Winter is a perfect time for hot, robust meals in varied combinations…and a favorite for years, has been escarole and pepperoni soup, an odd combination that has an ability to ward off advancing chills and calm feverish thoughts. Simple preparation is key and ingredients are substitutable with others only at the peril of sacrificing the rich and abundant taste that the original recipe will deliver. I do not know how or when pepperoni got into this basic Italian chicken soup. Speculation points towards “…it was there, so i threw it in…”. Whatever the circumstances, the results are terrific. This is fast food at its best.
